Here are highlights of what we learned from Hiring to Grow: What You Need to Know
It can be challenging and even a bit scary to grow your business and hire employees unless you have support behind you. Below is a recap of some of the fantastic advice given by HR Advisor and Client Advocate, Michelle Beck-Howard from G&A Partners. Michelle shared a wealth of information at our March WINspired Luncheon on what we need to take into consideration in hiring to grow our businesses.
Facilitating our discussion was WIN member Jean Hanson of Marketing Systems by Design. Jean is well-versed in hiring and training (employees, contractors and virtual assistants) having run multiple businesses that primarily serve the commercial and residential cleaning industry.
Here are some of the highlights we learned from this session:
Start by writing – Put down everything you do, then rank which things you really need to be the one to do and which things makes more sense for someone else to do
Keep it in writing – Formalize your offer letter, your rules and the role the employee is expected to fulfill
Research – Google minimum wage and hour laws for your state; look through the FAQ page
When hiring a VA (Virtual Assistant) or subcontractor – be absolutely sure they pass the 20 point check list from IRS.gov
When hiring a VA, they should have their own business with other VA clients,
invoice you regularly, and be sure to have a contract
When hiring an intern – For unpaid internships, make sure it is a learning experience that passes the “primary benefit test” for the intern (see guidelines from the Department of Labor).
Think benefits – you do not have to offer health insurance until you have 50 employees or more; but keep in mind, you are competing for the pool of good employees. Think about adding things like paid time off, education benefits, etc., to remain competitive
A company like G&A Partners also offers group rate benefits (and if your company is too small, they have brokers who do the same for tiny businesses)
We talked about the benefits of documenting work processes no matter how you hire
Think everything through clearly about what you need before you hire
Idea from attendee: State your core values when you advertise to hire. It’s very important to hire based on shared values which are intrinsic above skills that can be developed/refined
We hope this information is helpful for your business in hiring to grow!
